Better as the original?

Fajitas, tacos, nachos ...  does this also sound like heaven on earth to you? Tex-Mex cuisine is one of my favourites. The abbreviation stands for Texan and Mexican but it is not quite the same as traditional Mexican cuisine. It has many common features, but there are also differences.

In Tex-Mex cuisine, they use a lot of cheese, meat and usually beef, pork or chicken, beans, tortillas and a lot of spices. The dishes are known to be often spicy. This is because they use a lot of chilli, cumin and coriander. A popular dish are the nachos with beef, cheddar and guacamole. In the following link you will find a recipe of it: https://www.delish.com/cooking/recipe-ideas/recipes/a51518/nachos-supreme-recipe/

The Tex-Mex cuisine did not originate in Mexico, but in the United States. Americans started to make Mexican dishes themselves, because they liked it so much, but they made them with the ingredients they had. So it is actually a mix of the American culture and the Mexican culture.

So it is already clear that Mexican cuisine is not the same as Tex-Mex cuisine, but now I am going to explain the clear differences. To start with, the flour tortillas and the crispy ones. These are an invention of the Americans and are therefore less likely to be found in Mexico. Another big difference is the use of beef. The real Mexicans used only chicken, pork and sometimes fish. The Americans added beef, because they always had a good catlle industry. But finally, the biggest difference is in the cheese. In the real Mexican kitchen, they do not use much cheese and if they do, it is white cheese. The Tex-Mex kitchen on the other hand uses a lot of cheese and prefers the yellow cheeses like cheddar.

So many people actually think of Tex-Mex cuisine when they hear Mexican food.

Thank you for reading my blog and hope to see you again!

  1. I think this is a great blog. To start, I think it's good because you give a lot of examples of the food so it's easy for me to visualizing it. You also give a lot of information but with the examples it don't get complicated. I really like that Tex- Mex food and before I didn't knew the backstory of it, actually now I want to taste it and find the difference between the food. So really nice blog.
